Majority of Americans disagree with Biden that climate change is ‘greatest threat’ facing the nation

President Joe Biden has made it clear that addressing climate change is a top priority of his administration, even recently referring to the issue as the “greatest threat” facing America today.

Unfortunately for Biden, a recent survey revealed that less than a third of American voters agree and a solid majority disagree with his labeling of climate change as the “greatest threat,” Breitbart reported.

Biden: Climate change is the “greatest threat”

The question about whether Americans agree with Biden’s dire assessment of the danger posed by climate change likely stemmed from remarks he made last week to U.S. military members at a base in the United Kingdom following his arrival for a series of summits in Europe.

Citing the pressing need for “ambitious climate action” to stop the globe from warming, Biden recalled a discussion with the Joint Chiefs of Staff at the Pentagon when he served as vice president to former President Barack Obama.

“And this is not a joke: You know what the Joint Chiefs told us the greatest threat facing America was? Global warming,” Biden said.

“Because there’ll be significant population movements, fights over land, millions of people leaving places because they’re literally sinking below the sea in Indonesia; because of the fights over what is arable land anymore,” he added.

Americans disagree

Between June 10-13, Rasmussen surveyed 900 likely voters and, with a margin of error of 3%, found that only 29% agreed with Biden that climate change was the “greatest threat” facing the nation. Disagreeing with that assessment were 54% of Americans, while 17% were unsure either way.

Interestingly, only about 42% of Democrats agreed with Biden on climate change being the “greatest threat,” while roughly one-third of Democrats disagreed. Meanwhile, 76% of Republicans and 56% of independents also disagreed with the president’s ranking of climate change as the biggest threat facing the United States.

Furthermore, in terms of Biden’s “ambitious climate action” proposals, there doesn’t appear to much appetite for the increased spending and inevitable higher taxes and utility costs that would result from Biden’s plans. Forty-two percent said they would be firmly opposed to paying anything extra, and only 16% of those who agreed that climate change was the “greatest threat” were willing to pay the higher taxes and utility costs to combat it.

A threat, but not the greatest

Nor is this Rasmussen survey an outlier in terms of where climate change ranks among a number of other, arguably more pressing threats to the nation, as revealed by two other major polling firms within the past year.

In March, Gallup asked American voters to rank 11 different threats the nation faced. Global warming/climate change ranked seventh on the list, following well behind cyberterrorism, nuclear weapons in North Korea and Iran, international terrorism, infectious diseases and China’s growing economic power.

In September 2020, Pew Research surveyed voters in 14 different nations about top threats, and while most Europeans ranked global climate change as the top threat facing their nation, that issue ranked fifth for Americans, falling behind the spread of infectious diseases, foreign cyberattacks, terrorism, and the spread of nuclear weapons.
