Pelosi calls for an investigation into Trump-era subpoenas

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) isn’t letting go of the “witch hunt” that she helped lead against Donald Trump during his presidency.

Months after Trump left Washington, Pelosi is renewing her party’s grievance with Trump for “politicizing” the Justice Department, this time over allegations the DOJ subpoenaed his opponents. The House Speaker is calling for Jeff Sessions and Bill Barr to testify before Congress over actions that she said went “beyond” Watergate, the Washington Examiner reported.

Pelosi calls for new investigation

Pelosi was responding to a report from The New York Times that the Justice Department, under Attorney General Jeff Sessions, subpoenaed information from Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) in 2017 and 2018, when Schiff was ranking member of the House Intel panel, as part of an investigation of intelligence leaks.

At least 12 people may have been targeted, including staffers and their family members. Pelosi called it “another manifestation” of how the Justice Department went “rogue” under Trump, and said it was “beyond belief” that Sessions and Barr had no knowledge of the subpoenas, as both have insisted.

She invoked a well-worn Trump-era cliché, calling the alleged conduct “beyond Richard Nixon,” and called on Barr and Sessions to testify.

“Richard Nixon had an enemies list. This is about undermining the rule of law, and for these attorneys general … or Sessions, at least, to say they, too, didn’t know anything about it is beyond belief,” Pelosi said.

“So we will have to have them come under oath to testify about that,” she added.

Dems complain of “politicized” justice

Pelosi’s latest threat echoes the partisan circus of hearings, subpoenas and investigations she helped prosecute as a leader of the “#Resistance.”

Another key player in that effort was Schiff, a close Pelosi ally and zealous Russian collusion truther who led the first impeachment of Trump. In light of The Times report, some have noted that Schiff leaked the personal phone records of Republican Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA) and others during that effort.

Pelosi impeached Trump twice, the second time after he left office.

Democrats frequently lambasted Trump’s DOJ as political, and the Biden DOJ has gone out of its way to claim that it is restoring independence. That hardly appears to be the case as Trump supporters languish in solitary confinement over the Jan. 6 riot.

In the meantime, the Biden Justice Department appears to be getting one step ahead of Pelosi with an internal investigation.
