Vice President Kamala Harris made history on Saturday, becoming the first sitting vice president to march in a LGBT pride parade, according to Mediaite.
“We still have so much to do,” Harris told spectators.
“We are committed”
“We celebrate all the accomplishments. Finally marriage is the law of the land,” the vice president continued, standing alongside her husband, First Gentleman Doug Emhoff.
“We need to make sure that our transgender community are all protected. There is so much more work to do and I know we are committed,” she added.
Harris wore a T-shirt to the march that read “LOVE IS LOVE” while Emhoff’s shirt read, “Love First.”
Although Harris spoke passionately while attending the pride parade in Washington, D.C., there was another recent event about which she seemed far less enthusiastic.
As the Washington Examiner noted late last month, Harris was widely criticized for tweeting a picture of herself on May 29 with a caption that encouraged people to “enjoy the long weekend.”
Her message contained no reference to Memorial Day or what made the weekend significant. Colorado Rep. Lauren Boebert (R), called out Harris for the disrespectful tweet, responding with her own tweet that read, “Care to mention WHY we’re having a long weekend, Kamala?”
Former North Carolina Republican Rep. and Senate candidate Mark Walker responded as well, tweeting a picture of a boy visiting his military father’s grave and stating, “Maybe this young man could explain to you what this ‘weekend’ is all about, Madame Vice President.”
Following the backlash, Harris appeared to do damage control, publishing a second tweet the next morning in which she offered praise for America’s fallen service members, calling them as “heroes” to whom we owe “everything.”
Harris was not alone in being criticized by those who felt she had disrespected the country’s fallen heroes, as President Joe Biden faced similar accusations after he failed to acknowledge those who had died during the D-Day invasion.
However, as Daily Wire co-founder and conservative commentator Ben Shapiro noted on his podcast Tuesday, Biden did find time to praise the alleged bravery of transgender individuals.
