New data shows border is essentially wide open, with 180k illegal immigrants apprehended in May alone

SOUTHERN BORDER- No crisis here. Months after cackling Kamala was put “in charge” of the border crisis, things are getting much, much worse, according to The Federalist.

New monthly data released this week by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) shows that in May, 180,000 migrants (illegal aliens) were apprehended, a 20-year high. That number puts the U.S. on track to exceed 1.5 million border apprehensions by the end of the fiscal year in September.

As the outlet noted, this surge of illegal migration is historic, and not in a good way. It has been over 21 years since federal authorities detained that many illegals in a single month, which occurred in April 2000.

Despite all of that, so-called immigration advocates and some in the mainstream media tried to deflect by saying that apprehensions of unaccompanied minors and families declined in May compared to April; 23 percent for minors and 31 percent for families, which they attempt to use as an indication that Biden’s policies are working in getting the border under control.

However, the open borders crowd forgot one important component of the data CBP released this past week. Overwhelmingly, the vast majority of arrests thus far this year have been single adults traveling alone, which numbered over 121,000 in May and nearly 660,000 so far this year.

That is twice the number of encounters in each of the past two years and well over double the number from 2018.

So, what’s the big deal? Namely because single adults are not the ones typically shown on the mainstream media, such as those shown crossing the Rio Grande River in broad daylight, or those who turn themselves in to CBP when they reach the U.S. side of the border.

Nor are they the ones claiming asylum nor lining up to be processed and released by CBP.

Who are they then? The ones attempting to evade law enforcement, which means those who engage police in high-speed car chases, small groups trespassing on South Texas ranches, often in camouflage.

They are the ones committing crime, committing burglaries, assaulting CBP agents, and are often involved with smugglers and organized crime. It is fair to say that a good number of these men—and most of them are men—have criminal records, thus are trying to avoid detection.

One factoid hidden within the above numbers. That figure of 121,000 accounts for encounters at the border, not individuals. One encounter could involve more than one person, while an encounter might also include someone who was previously nabbed trying to cross the border.

According to CBP, some 38 percent of those encounters involved individuals who tried to cross the border sometime within the past year. While such encounters occur every year, the CBP says so-called “recidivist” border crossers usually averages closer to 15 percent.

This means that 2-1/2 times as many people who are initially turned away make a second or more attempt to get into the country.

What does that mean? Basically, that Title 42, which is a program where illegals are quickly expelled back across the border doesn’t necessarily work as good as actual deportation. That law was implemented by former President Donald Trump in response to the pandemic.

Actual deportation carries with it a criminal conviction and the prospect of prison time for re-offenders, whereas Title 42 does not.

While the above numbers tell us how many illegals are caught, it doesn’t tell us how many get away. CBP estimates that around 1,000 people per day are sneaking into the country without being either identified or taken into custody—the highest in recent memory, according to federal officials.

As The Federalist notes, determining how many illegals in fact get away isn’t an exact science by any means, however, is only an estimate based on the number of migrants observed entering the country, but law enforcement is unable to arrest, therefore it is likely that figure is in fact probably higher.

Federal authorities are confident they are dealing with a significant, probably a record number of “got aways” because often times, they can detect illegal border crossers but are tied up dealing with families and children who have turned themselves in, crossing into the United States because the Biden administration has signaled to them that they will be allowed to remain in the country.

That is actually part of the plan by cartel-associated smuggling networks, who coordinate groups of families and minors in order to tie up law enforcement so groups of adults can cross the border undetected in a different location.

All migrants pay money to cartels to cross the Rio Grande, however those who want to avoid detection pay significantly more, due to the fact smugglers have to get them over the border and past CBP checkpoints using U.S.-based drivers and stash houses along the way.

So how do these migrants pay the cost of their journey? Many are smuggling drugs across the border on behalf of the cartels that control the border. This is supported by recent CBP data which shows a steady increase in the volume of illicit drugs being brought into the United States.

So far in FY 2021, drug seizures are greater than all of fiscal 2020, which includes an 18 percent increase from April to May. Meanwhile, seizures of fentanyl, a synthetic opioid that has led to an explosion in overdose deaths nationally has likewise exploded, from 2,801 pounds in 2019 to 4,775 last year, and 7,450 this year.

What does all of this mean? That record numbers of illegals are getting into the United States, the import of illicit narcotics into the country is exploding, and the border is getting much, much more dangerous.

In March, Law Enforcement Today reported on a former ICE director who slammed the Biden administration’s handling of the border. For more on that, we invite you to:

DIG DEEPER

WASHINGTON, DC- A former Trump administration official lit into the Biden administration this past weekend, taking them to task over attempting to lay blame on former President Donald Trump for the disaster at the U.S.-Mexico border.

Tom Homan, former acting ICE director addressed claims that the current crisis at the border was “planned” during last year’s presidential campaign.

Homan, appearing on Fox News’ Fox and Friends told anchor Pete Hegseth that the current administration has undermined the previous, very successful policies implemented under the Trump administration where it concerns immigration policy, including the since-scuttled remain in Mexico policy.

Homan told Hegseth that in 2020, the number of alien minors entering the U.S. was down 70% from the year before. He also said that illegal entry into the country was down anywhere between 50-80%, depending on which month was being looked at.

“Last month, Joe Biden’s policy created a 300% increase in alien children,” Homan said.

“The border is not secure because the Biden administration has undone all the success of the Trump administration. You got a job to do, educate yourself, give me a call, I’ll tell you how to fix it,” Homan continued. “But you can’t go on national TV and say this is President Trump’s fault.”

Homan then went on to lay the blame squarely on Biden and the Democrats, claiming they planned the crisis during last year’s presidential campaign.

“When Joe Biden made those promises during the campaign of ending ICE detention, ending the remain in Mexico program, giving amnesty and DACA and healthcare…”

Homan said those promises are directly responsible for the current border situation, noting that “when you make those types of promises you know they’re going to come.”

He further blasted members of the Trump administration, as well as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi for going on national TV and laying the blame on Trump and his team. Homan also said that Democrats cannot go on national television and admit to the American people that they had sold out the country to win an election.

“When you make those types of promises, you know they’re going to come. SO they can’t go on national TV and say we sold out America to win an election. Joe Biden can’t say ‘I folded to the left to get votes and gave up the security of the border.’

“Again, the most secure border we’ve ever seen under President Trump.”

Hegseth then brought up the fact that Alejandro Mayorkas, Department of Homeland Security Secretary had ordered FEMA to the border to help with the situation down there, noting that agency typically deals with “storms, floods and other major disasters, and questioned Homan if this was an admission that the border situation was in fact a “disaster.”

“Absolutely,” Homan said. “Actions speak louder than words,” while then noting that FEMA’s own mission statement, “Helping people before, during and after a catastrophic disaster or crisis” accurately describes the current situation at the U.S.-Mexico border.

“It is a disaster; it is a crisis,” Homan said.

He also noted that “you never saw anyone coming across the border wearing a Trump shirt” while noting that a lot of them were wearing Biden tee shirts coming across.

Meanwhile, Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-LA) laid blame squarely on Biden for the surge of migrants crossing into the country at the southern border.

On Fox News Sunday, Cassidy told host Chris Wallace in response to a question as to what degree Biden’s policies have caused the crisis.

“Empirically it is entirely. You can’t help but notice that the administration changes and there is a surge,” Cassidy said.

Cassidy also noted that one of Biden’s advisers had made a statement in Spanish that the border was not closed, and only changed her mind and claim in English that she had misspoken.

“I can tell you the Spanish version is being heard, not the English,” he said, noting that message is resonating with those coming to the U.S. and those who are sending their children here, even if it means putting them at risk.

“And so when people think they can get in, they begin sending their unaccompanied child on a train ride across Mexico where she may be kidnapped and trafficked, on the hope they’re going to be waved through at the border.”

Cassidy also addressed Mayorkas’ deployment of FEMA to the border.

“They’re sending FEMA for reinforcements—not for today, not for tomorrow, but for three weeks from now,” he said.

Law Enforcement Today has been reporting on the border crisis for months. For more on our reporting we invite you to:

DIG DEEPER

WASHINGTON, DC- Texas Rep. Michael McCaul (R) issued stern words of caution on Tuesday, warning that by summer there will be “probably somewhere around a million people trying to get into this country illegally.”

McCaul, appearing on Fox News Channel’s “The Story” slammed Joe Biden’s border policy, accusing him of creating a “humanitarian crisis.”

“President Biden says he wants us to be humane. He’s actually created a humanitarian crisis.

These poor children, they get trafficked all the way up that dangerous route. And now, we don’t have enough detention space to put them in, and then you’ve got the COVID crisis down there as well. I think they have created the Biden border crisis. They need to fix it,” McCaul said as reported in Breitbart News.

Earlier Tuesday on Fox Business’ “Mornings With Maria,” McCaul said that it was “easier to cross the border illegally into the United States” than it is to tour the United States Capitol after Biden has reversed nearly all of former President Trump’s immigration policies.

Newsmax reported that McCaul said:

“He’s allowing them to come in without applying in Mexico. The catch and release policies are gone now. He stopped the building of the wall.”

McCaul contrasted the halting of construction of the border wall with the razor-topped fence that has been constructed around the Capitol.

He also sharply criticized Secretary of Homeland Security, Alejandro Mayorkas for sending the wrong message to those who are thinking of entering the country illegally.

“When the secretary of Homeland Security says, you know, don’t come now but maybe come later, it sends exactly the wrong message,” McCaul told Maria Bartiromo.

“We’ve seen this move before when you interviewed me on the Rio Grande River during the Obama administration. We are now going back to that same era.”

On “The Story,” McCaul slammed the administration’s approach to the minors who are entering the country.

“I think it’s not only a threat to these children who are being exploited, but—and they know the laws in our country.

But it’s also a threat to Americans, this population coming in. Biden has cut off these agreements with Mexico, Central America, where they’d have to stay in Mexico to apply for asylum.

“And now, they’re—I’ve seen this before, Martha, and I predict this, by summer you’re going to see, as my governor just said, probably somewhere around  a million people trying to get into this country illegally.

And as I’ve said before, it’s ironic that you can get into this country illegally easier than you can get a tour of this Capitol right behind me,” he told anchor Martha MacCallum.

This is nothing new for McCaul. In 2019, he wrote an op-ed on Fox News in which he slammed Democrats for blocking meaningful border legislation some 18 times from coming to the House floor for a vote.

He had accused Democrats back then of “playing politics with people’s lives” while the crisis at the southern border “worsens by the minute.”

Speaking to Bartiromo this week, McCaul expressed concern about the surge in illegals entering the country who are COVID-positive and the fact that even though tests for COVID are taking place, those people, due to “catch and release” are cut loose into the country.

“They test them and then release them onto the streets and they’re trying to figure out how to deal with this policy,” McCaul said.

“It’s absolute chaos down there, Maria and it’s sad because we made a lot of success triumphs under the prior administration to secure the border which is so important, and I believe that Biden with the stroke of a pen has reversed all of this.”

McCaul said that Biden now owns the crisis at the border.

“Within a month, they’ve created a crisis at the border. These are very sophisticated traffickers. Maria, I was a federal prosecutor down there for many years. Their business, they know what they’re doing, they know what our policies and laws are.”

He also blasted the message being sent by the Biden administration, calling it “the worst.”

“It’s basically we’re open for business, come on in, and so now they’re dealing with the crisis at hand,” he said.

“You’ve seen how dangerous it can be. It puts these children at risk as well. But also, the bad actors that could come into the United States worries me, and the drugs and the potential terrorists. This is really sad to see in my home state and all along the southwest border.”
