Vice President Kamala Harris has long faced criticism from the right over her reluctance to visit the U.S.-Mexico border since being tasked with a leading role in addressing the immigration crisis earlier this year.
In the wake of a widely panned Latin America tour, the subject is gaining more traction — and it appears that Harris is already tired of answering related questions.
“I’m not finished”
During an interview with Univision reporter Ilia Calderon on Thursday, the vice president seemed upset in her response to a question about a specific plan or timetable for when she might personally visit the border.
Earlier in the week, Harris made a vague promise to eventually travel to the border, which prompted Calderon to seek specifics.
“I’ve said I’m going to go to the border,” Harris began, only to be interrupted by the interviewer.
“When are you going to the border?” Calderon pressed further.
In a terse reaction accompanied by her trademark laugh, Harris replied: “The administration has asked — I’m not finished. I’ve said I’m going to the border, and also, if we are going to deal with the problems at the border, we have to deal with the problems that cause people to go to the border, to flee to the border.”
“I haven’t been to Europe”
Further stressing her focus on “root causes,” Harris finally offered a simple, if vague, answer to a third question about when she might actually visit the border, declaring: “I’ll keep you posted.”
Her latest interview misstep came on the heels of another underwhelming performance when she sat down with NBC News anchor Lester Holt, who asked a similar question.
“We’ve been to the border,” she claimed, prompting Holt to interject with the fact that Harris has not personally visited since accepting her assignment from President Joe Biden.
“And I haven’t been to Europe,” she shot back. “I don’t understand the point you’re making.”
It was during this interview that she made the promise of an eventual border visit. As her response to follow-up questions by Calderon suggests, however, those plans have not yet been made and she is not excited about continuing to field questions on the subject.
