Vice President Kamala Harris might be a mainstream media darling and the presumptive Democratic nominee in 2024 if President Joe Biden decides to forgo another term, but recent polling data proves that she could face a potentially insurmountable obstacle.
According to the Washington Examiner, a recent YouGov poll revealed that Harris is shockingly unpopular across the country, especially among critical voter blocs like independents. The numbers spell absolute disaster for Democrats should they be forced into fielding her for a potential 2024 run, especially if former President Donald Trump or even Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) jump into the race.
Harris is in trouble
Remember, long before Harris was selected by Biden as his running mate — fulfilling his pledge to supporters to consider a female person of color for the ticket — Harris as a 2020 presidential candidate couldn’t even make the Iowa caucuses, as she dropped out of the race in December 2019.
Apparently, her popularity hasn’t changed much, as the YouGov polling revealed several interesting tidbits about where she stands as far as the country is concerned, along with how she ranks in the eyes of voters from different political leanings.
Among all U.S. voters, 48% currently hold a very or somewhat unfavorable view of Harris, with only 41% holding a very or somewhat favorable view. The remaining 10% in that category indicated that they “don’t know,” which also isn’t exactly desirable for a candidate.
Not surprisingly, among Democrats, Harris scored a 74% among those who view her favorably, but 19% of Democratic voters — still a huge number — hold an unfavorable view.
However, Harris’ worst nightmare in the latest polling numbers was revealed among independent voters, with an astonishing 57% holding an unfavorable view of the vice president, while only 32% of independents viewed her favorably. Independent voters, especially in a close race, are an absolute make-or-break voting bloc that any candidate aims to capture.
Why so unpopular?
As the Washington Examiner pointed out, former Vice President Dick Cheney — who wasn’t exactly a popular guy — scored a 60% approval rating by May of his first term under former President George W. Bush. Former Vice President Al Gore also managed to stay above 50% during his first term.
While we may never know all the reasons why Harris is not performing well at this stage of her term in the White House, it’s not a stretch to assume that one major issue that could factor into the numbers is the escalating immigration crisis at the southern U.S. border.
Nearly three months have elapsed since Biden appointed Harris as a point person to investigate the “root causes” of the immigration crisis, but not only is there little to no movement on her progress, but she has yet to visit the border and show even a modicum of leadership on the issue.
One must assume that Americans of all political stripes take notice of her gross lack of action on a crisis that has real-world ramifications which transcend political allegiances.
Should Biden bow out of a reelection bid in 2024 and if Harris’ numbers remain at such dismal levels, don’t be surprised if popular Democrats like Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) or even Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) smell blood in the water and consider their own bids for the White House.
