A Mexican teen who crossed the southern border with cartel smugglers was found desperate and crying out for his mother in a remote area of the Texas desert, where local authorities frequently recover bodies of migrants who didn’t make it on the journey through the harsh terrain.
The 18-year-old named Hector was abandoned by the group he was traveling with, required medical attention and was in tears when the Terrell County sheriff found him, according to News Nation’s “Elizabeth Vargas Reports,” which filmed the rescue.
“I want to go home to my mother,” the teen said through sobs in Spanish.
The sobbing 18-year-old said he was traveling with a group of 10 others, but couldn’t keep up with them so they went off and left him. He had been wandering alone for two days.
Hector had made a flag out of pipes and a torn pillowcase to use as a signal for help.
When Terrell County Sheriff Thaddeus Cleveland found Hector, he was completely distraught and in tears.
He told the sheriff that he had originally fled the cartel in Mexico. “They threatened me in Tehuacan if I didn’t work for the narcos, because I was indebted to them. So I focused on getting out of Tehuacan as soon as I could,” he said.
“I want to go home to my mother. They left me in those hills and I went to the ranch looking for help,” Hector sobbed.
He had been planning to go to Indianapolis to stay with his father, who is currently working there as a roofer.
According to News Nation: Hector said he paid about 50,000 Mexican pesos to cross, the equivalent of about $3,000 U.S. dollars. He was expected to pay an additional $3,000 when he reached Indianapolis.
NewsNation correspondent Ali Bradley was riding along with the sheriff when the teen was found, and filmed the entire ordeal.
He was reportedly treated at a hospital and then returned to Mexico.
