Democrat Colorado governor ends mask mandate following updated guidance from CDC

Following the lead of several Republican-led states, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced this week that it had relaxed its guidelines on masks for Americans who have been fully vaccinated for COVID-19.

Just a day later, Colorado Gov. Jared Polis (D) announced that his state would be putting an end to its own mask mandate, as well as halting restrictions on businesses that were put in place to curb the spread of the coronavirus.

According to Breitbart, Polis announced the news in a statement Friday. “If you have been fully vaccinated, the pandemic is largely over for you, and you can now resume your activities without a mask,” the governor said.

Mask mandate dropped

Polis insisted, however, that those who remain unvaccinated should continue wearing a mask at least indoors, a recommendation that aligns with the CDC’s latest guidance.

“This is the day we have been waiting for,” Polis said Friday. “If you haven’t yet been vaccinated, you should continue to wear a mask in public indoor spaces. I hope the fun of an unmasked future incentivizes those who have yet to get the vaccine to do so.”

According to Breitbart, while masks won’t be required by the state, private businesses, daycares, and schools in Colorado can still require face coverings to be worn if they choose to do so.

“I’m going to bring my mask with me in my pocket, and when asked, as a matter of respect, I’ll put it on,” Polis said, as Breitbart reported.

Business restrictions lifted

According to Axios, Polis also said he’d be rolling back pandemic-related restrictions on businesses and entertainment venues in his state. The changes are set to take effect June 1.

The move comes amid a steady decline of new coronavirus cases and hospitalizations in Colorado, as well as the increased prevalence of vaccines for the disease, which are now available to any Coloradan ages 12 and up who wants one.

Meanwhile, the city of Denver has also said it won’t be requiring residents to wear masks and has lifted its own capacity limits on businesses, Axios reports.

It’s all great news for those who were chafing under government-imposed restrictions, and it comes as a sign that the nation is steadily moving closer to a return to normalcy. At long last.
