The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) finally caught up with the science on Thursday and announced that vaccinated Americans are no longer required to wear masks outdoors or indoors in most circumstances.
However, the new guidance apparently hasn’t convinced House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) that the return to normalcy should occur in the lower chamber, as she demanded that House members and staff continue to wear face coverings, Breitbart reported.
What did she say?
Manu Raju, CNN’s chief congressional correspondent, revealed Thursday afternoon in a tweet that he questioned Pelosi about the latest CDC guidance — the government agency that Democrats have treated as a COVID-19 rule enforcement bureau from the start of the pandemic.
“Speaker Nancy Pelosi told me ‘no’ she isn’t changing the rule requiring masks on the House floor. ‘No,’ Pelosi said. ‘Are they all vaccinated?’” Raju wrote.
In a follow-up tweet, Raju revealed that the Capitol physician gave the order for House members to remain masked, pending vaccination of all House members.

Even the White House issued a memo on Thursday giving permission for fully-vaccinated staffers to ditch the masks, according to Yahoo News. A Pelosi spokesperson cited one of the reason for keeping masks as a requirement in the House was due to a lack of transparency on whether or not House lawmakers have been vaccinated.
Republicans fire back
In response to Pelosi’s demands, a large contingent of House Republicans penned a joint letter to the House Speaker, demanding that the lower chamber go back to normal procedures following the CDC’s updated guidance on masks and social distancing.
“Speaker Pelosi, In accordance with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidance released on May 13, 2021 we urge you to immediately return to normal voting procedures and end mandatory mask requirements in the House of Representatives,” wrote Rep. Bob Gibbs (R-OH), according to the Daily Caller.
“CDC guidance states fully vaccinated people no longer need to wear a mask or physically distance in any setting except where required by governmental or workplace mandate. It is time to update our own workplace regulations. Every member of Congress has had the opportunity to be vaccinated, and you have indicated about 75 percent have taken advantage of this opportunity,” Gibbs added.
The Ohio lawmaker also stressed the importance of Congress setting an example for all Americans, arguing that Americans will take notice if Congress doesn’t return to normalcy after a bulk of its members have been vaccinated.
In other words, Pelosi continues to send mixed messaging to all Americans if she’s willing to place mask virtue signaling above the available, updated science.
