Biden reverses Trump policy requiring proof of health coverage for visa applicants

This week, President Joe Biden continued his trend of undoing the immigration and border policies of his predecessor.

According to the Washington Examiner, the latest move involved reversing an order by former President Donald Trump that denied visas to immigrants likely to overburden the U.S. health care system.

“Does not advance the interests”

Trump implemented the policy by executive order in October 2019.

Specifically, it served to require those seeking a visa in the U.S. to either provide proof of health insurance or evidence that they could afford any medical costs that might arise after becoming legal residents. If a visa applicant was unable to prove one or the other, the application would be denied.

Supporters of the policy asserted that Trump’s intention was to address the financial burden on the nation’s health care system — and U.S. taxpayers — presented by those who come to America unable to afford health care.

Now, that policy has apparently been completely scrapped by the Biden administration.

In a statement this week, the president announced he would not be moving ahead with Trump’s executive order because it “does not advance the interests” of the United States.

Staggering statistics

“My administration is committed to expanding access to quality, affordable healthcare,” Biden said. “We can achieve that objective, however, without barring the entry of noncitizens who seek to immigrate lawfully to this country but who lack significant financial means or have not purchased health insurance coverage from a restrictive list of qualifying plans.”

It marked just the latest in a string of executive actions repealing Trump-era immigration policies.

Earlier examples included a halt on further border wall construction, an increase to the nation’s refugee cap, and relaxed requirements for those hoping the seek legal immigration or asylum. Many Biden critics argue that his policies have resulted in a crisis along the U.S.-Mexico border.

In a recent report, Customs and Border Protection confirmed that the number of migrant encounters last month represented a spike of more than 900% over the same month last year. As Fox News explained, more than 178,622 migrant crossings were reported in April 2021 as opposed to only 17,106 in April 2020.

Unfortunately, the situation does not appear to be getting any better.
