Arizona Senate leader alleges ‘serious issues’ related to Maricopa County presidential election

An ongoing audit of the November presidential election results has put Maricopa County, Arizona, at the center of many recent news reports

Now, a member of the state Senate is raising serious questions about how the county handled the election itself — including a contentious claim about deleted evidence.

“The main database for all election-related data”

According to the Washington Examiner, Arizona Senate President Karen Fann, a Republican, has raised three primary concerns with Maricopa County officials.

She enumerated those issues in a letter informing recipients that auditors had discovered three “serious issues.”

The first involved the county’s apparent failure to follow a legislative subpoena, another dealt with the chain of custody for ballots cast in the county, and a final concern alleged the deletion of an election database.

“We have recently discovered that the entire ‘Database’ directory from the D drive of the machine ‘EMSPrimary’ has been deleted,” Fann wrote. “This suggests that the main database for all election-related data for the November 2020 General Election has been removed.”

In response to those concerns, she asked county officials for a meeting in the near future to discuss them further.

“False and ill-informed”

For his part, Maricopa County Board of Supervisors Chairman Jack Sellars took exception to Fann’s allegations in a statement on Friday.

“After reviewing the letter with County election and IT experts, I can say the allegations are false and ill-informed,” Sellers said. “Moreover, the claim that our employees deleted election files and destroyed evidence is outrageous, completely baseless and beneath the dignity of the Arizona Senate.”

Accordingly, he demanded “an immediate retraction of any public statements made to the news media and spread via Twitter.”

Initial reports offered no indication whether any county officials will meet with Fann. The official county position on the current audit is that it is illegitimate and that prior audits serve as the “final word on the subject.”

Of course, former President Donald Trump released his own statement in support of the letter, writing: “A devastating letter written by Arizona Senate President Karen Fann on voting irregularities, and probably fraud, in Maricopa County during the 2020 Presidential Election. Even the database was illegally deleted after the subpoena to produce the information.”
