Joe Biden has been repeating the mantra that paying people three hundred a week over and above the normal unemployment benefit does not stop people from looking for work.
Florida Gov Ron DeSantis decided to challenge that theory and he is now forcing those on unemployment to look for work. And like magic employers say they are seeing a spike in the number of applicants.
A businessman who owns two restaurants – one in Florida and one in New York says that applications are way up in their Florida restaurant after the return to the provision that you must apply for work and if you turn down a job, you lose your benefits altogether.
Buddy Foy Jr., owner of Chateau by the Lake, said:
“It’s just like that, magic fairy dust. Now you have to look for a job, the waiver is being removed for that search requirement for unemployment. And in the last 5 days, literally everyday it’s building to more and more.”
“We got zero phone calls in five months for jobs, we filled our jobs through referral, Steve, through our current employees. And in the last 5 days, our staff is saying ‘I can’t keep answering the phone, we have to serve customers.”
Foy says that companies can now compete for employees just as they did before the pandemic hit. By comparison, his New York restaurant isn’t faring so well where people are not forced to look for work.
Foy says that the restaurant will open Memorial Day weekend but that they will limit reservations based on how many people they are able to hire to handle the orders. Just one more reason why DeSantis is a much better governor than Cuomo as if we needed any more reasons.
Foy has now moved to Florida and he says he does not blame people for not applying when they can make more money sitting at home and watching Netflix. He understands there needs to be an incentive for people to look for work.
President Joe Biden has denied recent claims from Republicans that individuals are choosing to stay out of work to collect unemployment benefits after April’s jobs report saw the economy add 266,000 jobs for the month.
“I never said, and no serious analyst ever suggested, that climbing out of the deep, deep hole our economy was in would be simple, easy, immediate or perfectly steady,” the president said Tuesday.
