Brentwood, NY – New York Police Department (NYPD) Officer Ryan McKenna died in a single-vehicle crash on Monday night.
The 30-year-old off-duty officer was traveling eastbound on the Long Island Expressway in his 2018 Nissan Frontier when the crash occurred near Exit 54 at approximately 10:55 p.m., the New York Daily News reported.
Officer McKenna hit a median and flipped his vehicle, landing in the carpool lane.
Suffolk County Police Highway Patrol officers responded to the scene and found the officer trapped inside his vehicle, WABC reported.
They pulled him out and emergency medical personnel performed CPR while en route to the hospital.
He was rushed to South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore, where he succumbed to his injuries, the New York Daily News reported.
Suffolk County police are continuing to investigate the exact cause of the fatal crash.
Officer McKenna was assigned to the NYPD Housing Police Service Area 9 in Queens, where he served as a Woodside neighborhood coordination officer, the agency tweeted on Wednesday.
“Our PSA 9 family has suffered a tremendous loss,” the post read. “Woodside Neighborhood Coordination Officer Ryan McKenna was called home by God late Monday night. His presence will always be felt and he will now be the angel standing on our shoulders to help protect us. Rest in peace, Ryan.”
Officer McKenna served the department for four-and-one-half years, the New York Post reported.
