Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich is urging President Joe Biden to fire Vice President Kamala Harris from her role as border czar.
The story: Brnovich sent a letter to the president, which was obtained by Fox News, in which he argued that Harris is doing a poor job at leading the administration’s response to the migrant crisis.
“Like many Americans, I was encouraged by your March 24th appointment of Vice President Kamala Harris to lead the efforts to stem the tidal wave of illegal migration into our country,” Brnovich said in the letter. “However, to date, her response to the border crisis has been absolutely abysmal, so I am requesting that she be replaced as your ‘border czar.’”
Brnovich further claimed the vice president has shown “little interest” in seeing what is happening at the border and has not come up with a plan to deal with the issue but instead, travels to other states.
“[T]hings are getting worse and we do not yet know the full extent of dangerous people and drugs crossing into our communities,” he wrote. “I conclude by respectfully requesting that Vice President Harris be replaced as America’s “border czar” with a federal official who is willing to see the crisis firsthand and to work with state partners to address it.”
Why? Custom and Border Patrol said last week that there was a jump of 3% in migrants arriving at the border. They recorded a total of 178,622 migrants in April, up from the 172,000 encountered in March, which was the highest in the last 20 years.
“CBP continues to see a large influx of illegal migration along the Southwest Border,” acting CBP Commissioner Troy Miller said.
How we got here: Biden appointed Harris to be in charge of the administration’s official response to the crisis at the border, which they refused to label as such. Biden claimed the surge of migrants started under the previous administration and Harris said it was the result of the Trump administration’s disruption of the work that has been previously done.
The Biden administration also claimed that the high number of migrant crossings is “seasonal.”
Harris’ job when it comes to the migrant crisis includes leading negotiations with Mexico and “Northern Triangle” countries and developing a strategy to help hinder the influx of migrants in the long term. Critics have slammed the vice president for not visiting the U.S.-Mexico border since she was named for the position and for failing to hold a press conference on the border crisis.
So far, the vice president has taken part in virtual meetings with leaders in Mexico and Guatemala. She is set to visit the border next month.
The Biden administration claimed that the “root causes” of the border crisis are climate change, poverty, and violence in Central America.
