After being ousted as GOP conference chair in the House, Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) has vowed to make a comeback.
According to Breitbart, Cheney said in a recent interview with NBC that she intends to be “one of the leaders in a fight to help restore” the Republican Party in the post-Trump era.
“Are you the leader of the opposition in exile right now in the Republican Party?” host Savannah Guthrie asked the Wyoming lawmaker.
“I intend to be the leader, one of the leaders in a fight to help to restore our party,” Cheney replied, according to Breitbart. “In a fight to bring our party back to substance and principles, and in a fight to make clear that we won’t participate in the really dangerous effort that’s underway.”
“A battle we have to win”
Cheney also said we’re in the midst of “the opening salvo” of what some have called a fight for the soul of the GOP.
“This is the opening salvo, and it’s a battle we have to win because it’s not just about the Republican Party, it’s about the country,” the congresswoman said, according to Breitbart.
Cheney was among few Republicans to vote in favor of impeaching former President Donald Trump in the wake of a riot by his supporters at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6. The move earned her the ire of her colleagues, who voted this week to oust her as the No. 3 Republican in the House caucus.
Details of the vote are scarce, as House Republicans did their best to keep things under wraps. But none of it appeared to deter Cheney, who said shortly after the vote that she would do “everything” she could “to ensure the former president never again gets anywhere near the Oval Office,” according to the Washington Examiner.
Cheney has also said that she intends to drive voters away from pro-Trump candidates in the 2022 midterm elections, Breitbart reports.
“Bring it on”
Former President Trump also responded to House Republicans’ vote to oust Cheney from leadership, calling the congresswoman “a bitter, horrible human being” in a statement. “I watched her yesterday and realized how bad she is for the Republican Party. She has no personality or anything good having to do with politics or our Country,” he added, according to Breitbart.
Many expect that Trump will back a candidate to challenge Cheney in the next election as he and his supporters look to remove her from Congress for good.
Asked about that prospect during her interview with NBC, Cheney was curt: “You know, bring it on.”
