Brooklyn, NY – Late last night, an NYPD officer was shot 3 times after approaching an armed suspect just after a fatal shooting and crash took place nearby. The officer was taken to nearby Kings County Hospital to be treated for his gunshot wounds to the leg and buttocks along with one round that struck his bulletproof vest which quite possibly saved his life. The officer is in stable condition.

The injured officer was able to get off nine rounds in return fire. Another officer fired 12 rounds as well. The 26 year old suspect was hit in the leg. The suspect, a known gang member was taken to Brookdale University Hospital where he is expected to survive to face charges.
The officers were patrolling the area i an unmarked police cruiser when they spotted suspect from the earlier fatal shooting. They got out of their vehicle and immediately came under fire as the suspect “pulls a fire arm, turns on the officers, and begins to shoot.”
Police Commissioner Dermot Shea had this to say in regards to the wounded officer: “He’s in surprisingly good spirits, thankful to be alive. When you take a look at that vest and see quickly what the alternatives could be, we are just very very thankful. We are expecting a full recovery.”
