President Joe Biden has signaled he is willing to take whatever diplomatic steps necessary, even unorthodox ones, to rejoin the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran.
That isn’t surprising in light of a recent report documenting Biden’s decades-long attempts at appeasing Iran, including a proposal to cut the Islamic regime a “no strings attached” check in the wake of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, The Daily Wire reported.
It also comports with then-Vice President Biden’s support for the Iran nuclear deal under the Obama administration, as well as a massive cash payment delivered to the regime in early 2016, suspiciously timed around the release of U.S. hostages held by Iran.
Proposed cash gift for Iran
On Sunday, Politico published a lengthy piece documenting Biden’s outreach efforts toward Iran that date back to the 1970s when he was a senator from Delaware.
The report detailed how Biden particularly stepped up those efforts in the months after the Sept. 11 attack.
In the weeks immediately after the deadly terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon, Biden had reportedly suggested to his Senate aides that the timing was ripe for a friendly gesture to help bolster the strained but slightly improved relationship with the Islamic regime.
“Seems to me this would be a good time to send, no strings attached, a check for $200 million to Iran,” Biden was quoted as saying at that time, although it was noted that his aides quickly shot down the idea.
The Politico report further noted that during a speech to the American Iranian Council just a few months later, Biden called for more friendly overtures toward Iran by the U.S. government, praised the Iranian people for supposedly expressing grief for the American lives lost on 9/11, and issued an open invitation for Iranian leaders to meet with him at the time and place of their choosing.
Obama admin gave Iran $1.7 billion
The Daily Wire noted that the “grand gesture” proposed by then-Sen. Biden of $200 million to Iran in the weeks following the Sept. 11 attacks pales in comparison to an actual payment made by the U.S. government to Iran at the tail-end of the Obama administration.
According to The Washington Post‘s fact-checker in 2018, the Obama administration gifted the Iranian regime with $1.7 billion in cash in January 2016.
The first part of that payment involved a cargo jet landing in Tehran with a pallet of $400 million in cash, followed shortly thereafter by another $1.3 billion in cash — with the first payment occurring just one day after Iran released four U.S. hostages, including Post reporter Jason Rezaian.
Based on his past actions, it’s clear Biden has little regard to the potential threats an emboldened and enriched Iran would pose to the United States and American allies in the region.
