Shaun Donovan, a New York City mayoral candidate, greatly miscalculated the median price of homes in Brooklyn.
In an interview with the New York Times Mara Gay, Donovan, who is also the former secretary for Housing and Urban Development (HUD), was asked if he knows the median price for a home in Brooklyn.
“Do you happen to know what the median sales price for a home is in Brooklyn right now?” Gay asked.
“In Brooklyn, huh? I don’t [know] for sure,” he said.
“I would guess it is around $100,000,” he said.
Gay replied: “It’s $900,000.”

Slate staff writer Henry Graber said that Donovan’s answer is “not just wrong because New York City has insane real estate prices,” but also because the national median home sale price is $300,000.
Graber notes that there was not a single home in Brooklyn listed for under $100,000.
A spokesperson for Donovan told the Times after the interview the Democrat candidate misunderstood the question, believing he was asked about the assessed prices of Brooklyn houses.
“Mr. Donovan later emailed to say that his $100,000 answer referred to the assessed value of homes in Brooklyn,” reads an editor’s note in the Times article.
Gay conducted interviews with 13 other Democratic mayoral candidates.
New York businessman Raymond McGuire further underestimated the price of Brooklyn homes.
“And just answer this to the best of your ability, obviously. What is the median sales price for a home or apartment in Brooklyn?” Gay said.
“In Brooklyn, that number has gone up now. It depends on where in Brooklyn,” McGuire said. “It’s got to be somewhere in the $80,000 to $90,000 range, if not higher.
Former Democratic presidential candidate Andrew Yang was the only mayoral candidate to correctly guess the median price for a home in Brooklyn.
Andrew Yang was the only mayoral candidate to correctly tell the NYT what the median price of a home is in Brooklyn at $900k.
Former *housing secretary* Shaun Donovan guessed $100k.
Ray McGuire, who is worth $20 million, also guessed $100k.
