A federal grand jury indicted the four former Minneapolis police officers, including Derek Chauvin, who were involved in the death of George Floyd.
In detail: The three-count indictment that was unsealed on Friday says Chauvin violated Floyd’s right to be free from “unreasonable seizure …[and] the use of unreasonable force by a police officer.” The other former police officers, Thomas Lane, J. Kueng, and Tou Thao, are facing the same change because they did not take action to stop Chauvin from kneeling on Floyd’s neck.
“[T]he defendants saw George Floyd lying on the ground in clear need of medical care, and willfully failed to aid Floyd, thereby acting with deliberate indifference to a substantial risk of harm to Floyd,” the indictment reads.
Worth noting: Lane, Thao, and Kueng made an appearance in court in Minneapolis via a conference call, the Associated Press reports. Chauvin was not there.
In a separate indictment the grand jury charged Chauvin in relation to an incident that took place in September 2017 when he allegedly used unreasonable force on a 14-year-old boy in Minneapolis, the Justice Department said in a statement Friday.
According to the DOJ, the first count of that indictment says the former police officer “held the teenager by the throat and struck the teenager multiple times in the head with a flashlight,” while a second count says Chauvin “held his knee on the neck and the upper back of the teenager even after the teenager was lying prone, handcuffed, and unresisting, also resulting in bodily injury.”
How we got here: Floyd died in police custody last year after Chauvin knelt on his neck for more than nine minutes. He faced trial earlier this year and was convicted of murder by a jury. His lawyer recently filed a motion for a new trial, citing multiple, alleged errors in the trial.
Thao, Kueng, and Lane also face state charges, including aiding and abetting second-degree manslaughter and abetting second-degree murder. They have all pleaded not guilty.
