Former President Donald Trump sidestepped Big Tech social media platforms on Tuesday when finally he launched a personal communications platform.
Expanding on the Office of the Former President, from which Trump has issued longhand press releases exclusive to reporters following his widespread ban from most social media platforms, he launched a public version that anyone can access by visiting his personal website.
Essentially creating his own personal form of Twitter, Trump posts press releases, videos, and any other means of communication he chooses on the page titled “From the Desk of Donald Trump.”
In a video the former president posted announcing the new platform, a narrator described it as “A place to speak freely and safely.”
Users can share Trump’s posts to Facebook and Twitter, but cannot otherwise engage with them by liking or commenting.
As of now, only Trump can post on the page.
The platform’s long-awaited launch came just before Facebook’s Oversight Board again ruled on Wednesday to continue their ban on the former president. As of a new rule last month, not even so much as Trump’s voice is allowed on the platform.
“The Oversight Board has upheld Facebook’s decision to suspend Mr. Trump’s access to post content on Facebook and Instagram on January 7, 2021,” the board said in a statement.
Since the former president’s account is “indefinitely” banned, the board added “the company must reassess this penalty” within six months of the original suspension date.
However, it’s possible that by the time Facebook potentially reinstates Trump’s account several months from now, Trump may not want to rejoin the platform.
In various interviews since his social media ban, the former president has indicated that he has no wish to go back to companies like Twitter and Facebook.
Now, with the launch of “The Desk of Donald Trump,” his use for them is waning.
While nothing is set in stone as of yet, the coming months may provide insight as to the former president’s future ambitions, whether in the social media, news, or political realms.
