A nurse at a New Jersey school was suspended after she criticized the mask mandate for children and refused to wear a face covering.
The story: School nurse Erin Pein has been suspended by the Stafford Township school district after she stopped wearing a mask in protest of the mask mandate. She made the remarks in a Facebook video published by NJ Governor candidate Hirsh Singh.
What she said: Pein argued that mask is unnecessary because they cannot stop the virus from spreading, claimed that staff and students do not wear them correctly, and asserted that they have a negative impact on children who have to wear them for hours a day.
“I’ve seen so much pain and suffering” with the masks “at a multi-faceted level,” she said in the video.
Pein argued that forcing children to wear a mask amounts to “child abuse” and might cause “anxiety and depression” in children. She gave an example of a first-grader who she said experienced anxiety because of the mask mandate. Pein gave another example of a student who claimed he had worn a bandana over his nose and mouth for two weeks and could not take it off. They eventually had to cut the mask.
She explained that not wearing the mask correctly, touching them without washing hands, and leaving them on different surfaces, such as a school desk or in a pocket, is not safe.
The school nurse said she eventually informed her supervisor of her concerns who told her that it’s mandated by the local government and cannot be changed. She later stopped wearing a mask in hopes of drawing attention to the issues.
Pein was promptly suspended for violating the guidelines.
The rules: Under state Department of Education guidelines for the reopening schools, students still have to wear masks at all times, except when eating or if there is a medical reason not to wear one. Parents who do not want their children to wear face coverings can choose to continue remote leaning.
