Joy Reid Mocks Parent Who Says It’s Not Racist To Oppose Critical Race Theory

MSNBC host Joy Reid claims that parents who oppose critical race theory (CRT) being taught to their children are racist

CRT posits that “systemic” and “institutional” racism prevail to this day and teaches non-black people how they can combat racial injustices and “white privilege” both in society and within themselves.

CRT is at the center of The New York Times’ controversial and widely disputed “1619 Project,” which holds that the U.S. was founded on slave labor and that the true foundation of the country was the year 1619, when the first black slaves were brought to the New World.

Historians, public figures, and politicians on both sides of the aisle have strongly opposed including CRT in school curricula.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis was one of the most high-profile figures to take action to prevent teaching CRT concepts to young students. “Florida’s civics curriculum will incorporate foundational concepts with the best materials and it will expressly exclude unsanctioned narratives like critical race theory and other unsubstantiated theories,” the Republican governor said in March.

Before leaving office, President Donald Trump formed the “1776 Commission” to facilitate “patriotic education” in U.S. schools. The commission appeared to be a direct response to the Times’ “1619 Project.”

Reid claimed Tuesday that thanks to the “1619 Project, we’ve seen a growing movement to reframe how American history is taught in public schools.”

She also raised objections to parents who criticize CRT and accused a parent of being a racist for saying she is not racist if she opposes CRT being taught to her children.

“Well, some parents are opposed to critical race theory as new curriculum aren’t too pleased,” Reid said.

She played a clip of a parent who said: “Just because I do not want critical race theory taught to my children in school does not mean that I’m a racist, damn it.”

“It actually does,” Reid said, laughing, according to the Daily Caller.

“It’s just another example of Republicans turning kids into a wedge issue, just like their politically motivated attacks on transgender youth who just want to play sports,” she added.
