The U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) is now claiming that, contrary to what whistleblowers have alleged, it did not “stonewall” the Internal Revenue Service’s (IRS) interview with Kevin Morris.
Fox News reports that the CIA released a statement on the matter last week.
This comes after a whistleblower, last month, told Republican members of the U.S. House of Representatives that the CIA stopped the IRS from interviewing Morris.
The IRS had sought the interview as part of its investigation into Hunter Biden. Morris is the wealthy individual who has come to be known as Hunter Biden’s “sugar brother,” because, among other things, he has paid off Biden’s back taxes.
The whistleblower’s claim
The alleged incident, according to the whistleblower, took place in August 2021. At the time, the IRS was investigating Hunter Biden for tax violations, and, as part of the investigation, the agency decided it was going to interview Morris.
The whistleblower, however, claims that this is when the CIA got involved. The whistleblower told members of Congress that this is when the CIA “intervened to stop the interview.”
The whistleblower said that the CIA then had two members of the U.S. Department of Justices brought to CIA headquarters in order to be briefed on Morris.
At the end of the day, the whistleblower claims that the officials were told that Morris is off-limits – that he can “not be a witness in the investigation.”
Now, the CIA is attempting to refute these claims.
The CIA’s statement
Last week, James Catella – the CIA’s director of the Office of Congressional Affairs – sent a letter to House Republicans in which he claimed that the whistleblower’s allegations are “false.”
“Without confirming or denying the existence of any associations or communications, CIA did not prevent or seek to prevent IRS or DOJ from conducting any such interview. The allegation is false,” Catella wrote.
Catella claimed that the “CIA cooperates with law enforcement partners and does not obstruct U.S. law enforcement investigations or prosecutions.” And, Catella concluded by attempting to kick the can down the road, telling House Republicans, “To the extent your letter seeks information about any ongoing federal law enforcement investigation or prosecution, the Department of Justice is the responsible agency.”
What else would you expect?
House Republicans, though, are not buying Catella’s statement, and they have since vowed to continue investigating the whistleblower’s allegations. In other words, this matter is far from over.
