U.S. Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) has come under mounting political fire from her own party after repeated public squabbles with former President Donald Trump.
According to Breitbart, the third-highest ranking House Republican could soon find herself stripped of her significant power on Capitol Hill.
“As fed up as the rest of us”
At the crux of the issue is Cheney’s ongoing clash with House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), according to allies of the top House Republican. While Cheney believes that the Republican Party should distance itself from Trump, McCarthy has endorsed a GOP embrace of the former president’s influence in hopes of recapturing a majority following next year’s midterm elections.
The opposing viewpoints reportedly came to a head recently at a GOP leadership retreat in Florida, which was billed as an opportunity for the party to come together to form a cohesive campaign plan.
Several individuals close to McCarthy, however, told The Hill that Cheney’s impending ouster from her leadership spot is not a matter of if, but when — and who will replace her.
One unnamed McCarthy ally insisted that “a broad range of lawmakers” in the party “have had it with her,” describing Cheney as “a liability.”
McCarthy himself is “as fed up as the rest of us that she is focused on the past rather than winning back the House,” the individual continued.
“We all need to be working as one”
Another anonymous source added that there is “no way that Liz will be conference chair by month’s end,” predicting that when a vote takes place, “it will be fast” and everyone in GOP leadership already “knows the outcome.”
Although McCarthy has remained largely silent on the issue, he hinted on Tuesday that the Wyoming Republican might be on her way out as a member of the party’s congressional leadership.
“I have heard from members concerned about her ability to carry out the job as conference chair, to carry out the message,” he said on Tuesday. “We all need to be working as one if we’re able to win the majority. Remember, majorities are not given, they are earned. And that’s about the message going forward.”
Trump has been among Cheney’s vocal critics in recent weeks, but she has remained defiant, including in a tweet this week that proclaimed: “The 2020 presidential election was not stolen. Anyone who claims it was is spreading THE BIG LIE, turning their back on the rule of law, and poisoning our democratic system.”
A number of potential replacements are reportedly already being floated, including Reps. Elise Stefanik (R-NY), Jackie Walorski (R-IN), and Mike Johnson (R-LA). Whatever the outcome is, Republican voters are hoping that the party can ultimately unite and focus on the big picture: the 2022 midterm elections.
