Chuck Schumer is clinging to his post as Senate Majority Leader by the barest of margins.
Going into the 2022 midterm elections Chuck Schumer’s problems are beginning to multiply.
And Chuck Schumer had a knot in the pit of his stomach when this Democrat broke ranks.
Joe Biden’s address to Congress should have served as a rallying cry for Democrats to push a unified message about Biden’s socialist agenda.
Instead it only served to create dissention in the ranks as vulnerable Democrats broke ranks and criticized Biden.
Anti-gun Arizona Democrat Senator Mark Kelly figures to run in one of the most competitive races in the country next year.
Arizona is a newly minted battleground state and the outcome of Kelly’s race could determine which party holds the majority.
Democrats point to Joe Biden’s slightly better than average approval numbers as a sign of optimism about the midterms.
But the aftermath of Biden’s address to Congress showed those numbers may be a mirage.
After the speech, Senator Kelly’s first reaction was to criticize Biden for not proposing a plan to end the border crisis that Biden himself created by rolling back Donald Trump’s immigration policies.
“While I share President Biden’s urgency in fixing our broken immigration system, what I didn’t hear tonight was a plan to address the immediate crisis at the border, and I will continue holding this administration accountable to deliver the resources and staffing necessary for a humane, orderly process as we work to improve border security, support local economies, and fix our immigration system,” Kelly stated.
In March, the Border Patrol apprehended 172,000 illegal aliens trying to enter the country.
The administration holds a record 22,000 illegal alien kids in cages.
Kelly represents a border state bearing the burden of Biden’s border crisis, and Kelly fumed that Biden was leaving the states to fend for themselves.
“This continues to be a major problem that shouldn’t fall on the shoulders of Arizona communities. And I think it was important to highlight that it wasn’t part of the address last night,” Kelly added. “We’ve got to address this and it can’t be on Arizona taxpayers and Arizona towns that are really struggling right now. It’s a federal government problem.”
It was telling that Kelly’s first response to the speech was not to rally around Biden’s proposed six trillion dollars of welfare spending, which polls well in surveys where pollsters ask questions about it in the most favorable light for Democrats.
Nor did Kelly highlight Biden’s call to grab guns, which stood out because banning guns was the issue that prompted Kelly to run for office.
Rather, Kelly wanted to make sure the swing state voters he represents in Arizona knew he was not marching in lockstep with Joe Biden on opening the borders to a wave of illegal aliens.
Presidents’ popularity tends to drop the more they are in office.
Right now, Joe Biden is in his honeymoon phase.
If Mark Kelly is already looking to distance himself from Biden when Biden’s approval numbers are likely at their highest point, it could mean Chuck Schumer’s chances to retain the majority may not be as strong as Democrats think.
