Voters approve proposition banning abortion in Lubbock, Texas, largest American city to ban abortion

Texas voters have approved a proposition that will completely outlaw abortion in the city of Lubbock, creating a “sanctuary city for the unborn,” The Hill reported.

Lubbock became the 24th Texan city to completely outlaw abortion after Saturday’s vote. Republican state Rep. Dustin Burrows said, “Today is a victory for life and proof that the silent majority will still stand up for its Christian conservative values.”

Lubbock is the largest Texan city to pass such a measure, and it did so in overwhelming fashion. Voters approved Proposition A with 62% support against 38% opposition.

Texans reject abortion

The ordinance approved by Lubbock voters reads, “It shall be unlawful for any person to procure or perform an abortion of any type and at any stage of pregnancy in the City of Lubbock, Texas.”

The passage of Proposition A is modeled on a successful model that has been used by other Texan cities starting in Waskom in 2019. These ordinances have faced fierce legal challenges but have so far succeeded at their objective.

The effectiveness of these bans is derived from the lack of government enforcement. City governments are not enforcing the ordinances, and they rely on private citizens to file lawsuits against abortion providers.

Texas Tech University constitutional law professor Richard D. Rosen explained the ordinances mechanism, saying, “As long as Roe is good law, I think these suits will ultimately fail, but it [could make] abortion providers … expend money for attorneys fees, and it takes time.”

Future legal challenges

While cities like Lubbock may be unable to push out abortion providers, they can make business unprofitable in Texas. Death by a thousand lawsuits is the best measure Texans have as long as Roe v. Wade stands.

This is a model that could spread all over Texas and even to neighboring states looking for a way to combat Planned Parenthood. Americans are slowly becoming more aware of the evils of the abortion business and are rejecting it.

These new ordinances will cost abortion providers significantly in legal fees. More importantly, the significant number of legal cases could force a review of Roe v. Wade by the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court has a 6-3 conservative majority, and there is potential for the Supreme Court to finally right the wrongs of Roe v. Wade.

Planned Parenthood has vowed to fight back against the ordinances, which almost guarantees that pro-life advocates will have their chance to force the issue to the Supreme Court.
