House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has suffered another defeat.
The speaker lost out on an opportunity to widen the Democrats’ narrow majority after no Democrat received the votes necessary to advance to a special election runoff for an open congressional seat in Texas, Breitbart reported.
Democrat hopes dashed
The special election will be held for a seat that opened up in Texas’ Sixth Congressional District following the death of Rep. Ron Wright (R-TX) earlier this year.
Wright had been battling lung cancer since 2018, and died in February two weeks after being hospitalized for the coronavirus.
Taking the seat would have been a big help to the Democrats who are currently struggling to maintain a slim majority in the House. Democrats’ hopes were dashed, however, when voters advanced two Republicans to the congressional runoff race.
As noted by Breitbart, “The Democrats’ failure to make the runoff for this election is a blow to the party, which had reason to be optimistic about the race because of Democrats gaining ground in the district in 2020.”
President Joe Biden managed to come within three points of taking the district after former President Donald Trump easily won it by double digits in 2016.
Susan Wright leading
Susan Wright, the widow of former Rep. Ron Wright, is leading the way among the two candidates to advance to the special election race. Shortly after her husband’s passing, Wright announced that she planned to run for her late husband’s House seat. According to Decision Desk HQ results that came in Saturday evening, Wright received the most votes out of any of the 23 candidates up for consideration, with 19% of the vote.
Wright may have gotten a boost from former President Trump who gave her a last-minute endorsement, according to Breitbart.
Trump said in his endorsement that Wright “will be a terrific Congresswoman” who “will be strong on the Border, Crime, Pro-Life, our brave military and Vets, and will ALWAYS protect your Second Amendment.”
In a statement released around midnight on Saturday, Wright said, “I can’t tell you how honored I am to be the first-place finisher in this special election to succeed my husband Ron.”
Wright will now go on to face off against State Rep. Jake Ellzey (R), who finished about five percentage points behind Wright, on a date to be determined.
