A police union in Philadelphia on Friday gave out free Mr. Softee ice cream outside the district attorney’s office.
The message was clear: protest District Attorney Larry Krasner’s soft approach on crime ahead of a May primary election.
The Philadelphia Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 5 (FOP), which paid for the truck, reportedly plans to have a Mr. Softee truck parked outside Krasner’s offices every Friday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. until May 18, the day of the primary, according to Fox 29 Philadelphia.
“We figured we would go out and bring an ice cream truck—a Mister Softee truck out—because we have Mr. Softee in the DA’s office. Soft on crime, soft on sentencing. Too many shootings. We got six people a day average being shot in Philadelphia. That’s ridiculous,” FOP Lodge 5 President John McNesby told Fox 29.
The FOP is backing Krasner’s only challenger Carlos Vega to be Philadelphia’s top prosecutor.
Krasner’s campaign released the following statement, “Larry Krasner has a broad coalition of support from over 60 endorsers who represent constituencies from all over this city. They speak for the community, not the powerful and we’re proud that today they are out working to better Philadelphia rather than serving ice cream and spending money on publicity stunts.”
McNesby previously said a combination of the Covid-19 pandemic-forced delays of training new recruits;, increased retirements, and general disinterest to be a police officer in a major city has left Philadelphia’s force understaffed amid a spike in violent crimes.
“And you got to remember that once you go into the academy, it takes you about 10 months to finish,” McNesby said in April. “So, we’re not looking at putting any boots on the ground until maybe next Spring.”
McNesby said the department is operating “at dangerously low levels,” and claimed recent changes to the department requiring all trainees live in Philadelphia before they join the police academy may have contributed in the department becoming understaffed.
“Nobody is going to move to Philadelphia hoping that they get a job,” he said. “They want to make sure they secure employment, then move in.”
