The New York Post denies a former reporter’s claim the paper forced her to write a false story about Vice President Kamala Harris’ book being handed out to migrant children.
The report: In late April, Post writer Laura Italiano reported that unaccompanied migrant children were being handed a copy of Harris’ 2019 children’s book “Superheroes are Everywhere” as part of a welcome kit when entering the U.S.
However, The Washington Post later reported that there was only a “single copy of the book” given out and gave the story “Four Pinocchios.”
A spokesman for the Department of Health and Human Services appeared to confirm that there was only one copy of the book and stressed the book was not bought with taxpayers’ money.
After the story was revealed as inaccurate, Italiano resigned and claimed the Post “ordered” her to write the “incorrect story.”
“The Kamala Harris story — an incorrect story I was ordered to write and which I failed to push back hard enough against — was my breaking point,” Italiano claimed in the thread. “It’s been a privilege to cover the City of New York for its liveliest, wittiest tabloid — a paper filled with reporters and editors I admire deeply and hold as friends. I’m sad to leave.”
The New York Post responded Friday, saying they do not instruct reporters to write falsehoods and said the story was corrected immediately after “it came to the editors’ attention that it was inaccurate.”
“The New York Post does not order reporters to deliberately publish factually inaccurate information. In this case, the story was amended as soon as it came to the editors’ attention that it was inaccurate,” the paper said in a statement, according to Mediaite.
The Post initially deleted the original story and published a revised version titled “Kamala isn’t at the southern border — but at least one migrant kid got Veep’s book,” which also included an editor’s note about the original report.
“The original version of this article said migrant kids were getting Harris’ book in a welcome kit, but has been updated to note that only one known copy of the book was given to a child,” the note reads.
