Newsmax Apologizes To Dominion Employee For False Vote-Manipulation Claims

The conservative news network Newsmax publicly apologized to a Dominion Voting System employee who was accused of rigging voting machines to help President Joe Biden win the election last year.

The story: The apology came in a statement that the network published on Friday on its website. Specifically, Newsmax apologized to Eric Coomer, the company’s director of product strategy and security, for claiming that he had manipulated Dominion voting machines so that former President Trump loses the presidential election.

What they said: “Newsmax has found no evidence that Dr. Coomer interfered with Dominion voting machines or voting software in any way, nor that Dr. Coomer ever claimed to have done so,” the network said in the statement. “Nor has Newsmax found any evidence that Dr. Coomer ever participated in any conversation with members of ‘Antifa,’ nor that he was directly involved with any partisan political organization.”

“On behalf of Newsmax, we would like to apologize for any harm that our reporting of the allegations against Dr. Coomer may have caused to Dr. Coomer and his family,” it added.

Newsmax highlighted that the claims against Coomer came as part of its coverage of assertions made by “President Trump’s lawyers, supporters and others.”

How we got here: The apology follows Coomer’s decision to file a lawsuit against the network, One America News, and certain pro-Trump figures in December, including former Trump attorneys Sidney Powell and Rudy Giuliani. The lawsuit claimed that the defendants “elevated Dr. Coomer into the national spotlight, invaded his privacy, threatened his security, and fundamentally defamed his reputation across this country.”

Coomer argued that Newsmax and the others played an “integral” role in spreading the falsehoods against him, which put him and his family in jeopardy.

Newsmax has been dropped from the lawsuit after the apology, according to the Associated Press.

Worth noting: Dominion has also filed defamation lawsuits against MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell and Fox News, seeking billions in damages.
