A new report from Fox News alleges that “liberal dark money groups and networks” are at least partially behind the recent push from congressional Democrats to “pack” the Supreme Court.
Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-NY) recently introduced a bill in the House that would expand the number of justices on the high court by four, giving President Joe Biden the chance to appoint left-leaning justices that would swing the ideological tilt of the court back in Democrats’ favor. In the Senate, the effort is being led by Ed Markey (D-MA).
Behind them, Fox says, is a “coalition” of liberal financiers and activist groups including Demand Justice, Take Back the Court, and Indivisible.
Representatives from the three groups flanked Democratic lawmakers as they announced their new legislation.
Where’s the money?
Fox notes that it’s largely unclear where these groups — which have been open about their support for expanding the court, a practice colloquially dubbed “court-packing” — get their own funding. Tax forms are filed in such a way that shields donors from having to disclose their identities, Fox alleges.
Still, it is clear that the groups have ties to big-name Dems. According to Fox, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki has “served as an outside adviser” to Demand Justice, as did Biden’s “point person on judicial nominations,” Paige Herwig.
Fox also revealed that Demand Justice “is led by former Hillary Clinton aide Brian Fallon, who has close ties to the Democracy Alliance, a group of wealthy Democratic donors co-founded by liberal billionaire George Soros that helps steer the progressive agenda.”
What’s more, Fox says, “Soros’ Open Society Policy Center, a lobbying arm in his network, donated $2.6 million to Demand Justice around the time of its inception three years ago.”
The bottom line
Polls have consistently indicated that Americans are against court-packing, which is likely why House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has openly said that she will not put Nadler’s bill up for a vote in the lower chamber.
Instead, Pelosi has deferred to a commission recently established by President Biden to study various potential Supreme Court reforms.
Some on the right say the commission is specifically designed to give legitimacy to ideas like court-packing.
For now, however, it doesn’t look like Democrats have the votes in either the House or Senate to bring the proposal to fruition, anyway. Americans can only hope Republicans in Congress hold the line on this one.
