Six seats in the U.S. House of Representatives that are currently held by Democrats could go to Republicans in the upcoming election.Â
This is according to a new report from Fox News.
The seats are Maine’s Second Congressional District, Ohio’s Ninth Congressional District, Pennsylvania’s Eighth Congressional District, Washington’s Third Congressional District, Alaska’s At-Large Congressional District, and Michigan’s Seventh Congressional District.
The outlet is basing this on information that comes from The Cook Political Report.
Here are the details:
For those unfamiliar with The Cook Political Report, it “provides independent, non-partisan analysis of elections and campaigns for the U.S. House of Representatives, U.S. Senate, Governors and President as well as American political trends.”
As part of this analysis, it tracks each House seat and determines whether the seat is “likely Democrat,” “leans Democrat,” a “democrat Toss Up,” a “Republican Toss Up,” “Leans Republican,” or is “likely Republican.”
Currently, The Cook Political Report has 11 congressional seats as “Democrat Toss Ups,” that is, seats that are currently held by Democrats that could end up going to the Republicans in the upcoming election.
Fox narrows this list of 11 down to the six mentioned above. The outlet believes that there is a really good chance that Republicans will capture these seats, and it provides a brief rundown of each race.
It is also worth noting that many of these races are in districts that former President Donald Trump either won or nearly won during the 2020 presidential election.
Looking ahead
In the upcoming general election, all 435 seats in the U.S. House of Representatives will be up for grabs.
Currently, the Republicans hold a 218-213 majority in the House. They won this majority in the 2022 midterm election. The reader will likely remember that, even though the Republicans won, this was a disappointment because they were expected to win by a significantly larger margin than they actually did.
The Republican House majority has been shrinking in recent months with a number of untimely resignations and retirements. There is a possibility that the Republicans’ lead in the House may go down to only one in the coming months.
Forecasters believe that the Republicans stand of good chance of keeping their House majority in 2024 and of even increasing it. Republicans, according to the forecasters, also stand a good chance of winning the U.S. Senate and the White House.
But, of course, there are never any guarantees when it comes to political elections.
