Police released bodycam footage from an officer who shot a knife-wielding teen in Columbus on Tuesday.
The teen was confirmed by the family to be 16-year-old Ma’Khia Bryant. The graphic video begins at the moment the officer exits his vehicle and then encounters the teen who appears to be armed with a knife chasing a girl outside of a home.
Bryant appears to swing a knife at another girl, moments before the officer fires his weapon, striking Bryant, who died a short time later.
Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther addressed the situation, calling it “horrible, heartbreaking.”
“Based on this footage,” he said, “the officer took action to protect another young girl in our community, but a family is grieving tonight.”
Previously released footage from the scene shows bystanders arguing with the police, moments after the shooting.
