Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley has announced Monday morning she is running for governor. In the announcement on Facebook, Whaley said she was running “to do something to take on gun violence. To fix a broken economy. To fight corruption and criminality in Columbus. To make Ohio a place we can all be proud of.”
Nan Whaley can’t fix her city but now she wants to be Governor of Ohio
Whaley had announced earlier this year she would not be seeking a third term as Dayton mayor. Whaley had run for the Democratic nomination for governor in 2017 but withdrew to support the eventual nominee, Richard Cordray. He lost to Gov. Mike DeWine.
Whaley said in her announcement she wants to bring “Dayton tough” to Columbus and to break up the one-party monopoly in state government. Republicans hold all elected state offices.
“The people of Ohio deserve better. The same politicians have been in charge for 30 years as Ohioans have fallen further behind. It’s time for a change,” Whaley said in the announcement. “We deserve an Ohio where one job is enough to provide for your family. An Ohio where your kids have real opportunities. An Ohio where everyone, no matter your ZIP code, can thrive. I’m running for governor because it’s time Ohioans had a government — and a governor — who works for us, not for themselves.”

Democrats are tough on guns but soft of criminals
Ohio Republican Party Chairman Bob Paduchik released a statement saying:
Under Nan Whaley’s failed leadership, Dayton’s violent crime has spiked, poverty has risen to one of the highest levels in the nation, and incompetent infrastructure management left hundreds of thousands of Daytonians without water for days. Now, Nan Whaley wants a promotion. Ohioans deserve leaders who serve to better our communities, not build their own political resumes.
With a crime rate of 50 per one thousand residents, Dayton has one of the highest crime rates in America compared to all communities of all sizes – from the smallest towns to the very largest cities. One’s chance of becoming a victim of either violent or property crime here is one in 20.
