In a compelling testimony on Wednesday, former NFL quarterback Tim Tebow passionately implored members of Congress to champion a bill establishing a “rescue team” for victims of child sexual exploitation.
Tebow, a relentless advocate against child sex trafficking through the Tim Tebow Foundation (TTF), urged Congress to allocate increased resources to actively locate and rescue victims.
Emotionally charged during his opening remarks, Tebow read aloud a poignant letter from a survivor of sexual abuse, stating, “Rescue me. Help me. Monsters are chasing. Can’t you see? Monsters are whispering. Can’t you hear? Monsters are shouting you are nothing. Can’t you feel my pain?”
This plea follows whistleblower Steve Friend’s revelation to Congress last year, asserting that he was instructed to halt investigations into child sex trafficking cases to divert attention to parents expressing concerns at school board meetings.
Tebow’s foundation has collaborated with federal law enforcement agencies, notably achieving 316 victim identifications during Operation Renewed Hope conducted over 15 days last summer.
Despite these efforts, the enormity of the issue persists, as Tebow and fellow advocates conveyed to the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime and Federal Government Surveillance. Tebow underscored the urgency, questioning why frontline heroes combating child exploitation receive fewer resources compared to sports teams.
“I’ve had the privilege of playing for a lot of sports teams in my life,” Tebow reflected in his testimony. “And on almost all of them, we’ve had incredible resources to give us a better chance at winning a game, something that ultimately, as much as we care about it, doesn’t matter.
“Why would we not give as much,” he continued, “if not more resources, to the frontline heroes that are going after the most vulnerable boys and girls on the planet?”
Accompanied by other witnesses, including a Vice President at the TTF and a former Homeland Security Investigations supervisor, Tebow stressed the dire need for increased support.
He shared a conversation with Camille Cooper, the vice president of anti-human trafficking and child sexual exploitation at the TTF, revealing her heartbreaking realization that at least 50,000 identified victims endure abuse, surpassing the initial estimate of 20,000.
In this urgent call to action, Tebow urged Congress not only to talk about the issue but to actively address and invest in combating the widespread crisis of child sexual exploitation.
In September 2020, the Trump administration allocated a substantial $100 million to the TTF for the purpose of funding task forces, victim services, and victim housing.
Just the month before, the Justice Department had also granted the foundation an additional $35 million, specifically earmarked to aid victims in securing safe and stable housing.
