One political issue sparking widespread speculation is whether former President Donald Trump will launch another White House bid ahead of the 2024 race.
While he has declined to offer a definitive answer thus far, he addressed the issue during a recent interview with Fox News Channel host Sean Hannity, declaring that he is considering a 2024 campaign “beyond seriously.”
“No sitting president has come even close”
In typical fashion, Trump used the opportunity to tout his popularity among rank-and-file members of the Republican Party.
“The odds, the odds,” he said. “What are the odds? Look, I’ve got tremendous numbers. Nobody has ever gotten the numbers I’ve got. No sitting president has come even close.”
Trump went on to discuss the current issues facing the nation and President Joe Biden, particularly the Democratic Party’s push for more gun control and the possible tax hikes contained within a massive infrastructure spending proposal.
“There is more popularity now than there was the day before the election because they see how bad things are at the border,” he continued. “They see what’s going on.”
The former president told Hannity that Americans “see their guns are going to be gone” and “taxes are going up,” predicting a groundswell of support for his style of leadership. Among the other points of contention were environmental policy decisions he believes would cost American jobs and the nation’s energy independence.
“From a legal standpoint”
Trump confirmed that he plans to play a critical role in GOP politics during next year’s midterm election season, stopping short of revealing any firm plans for 2024.
“But I say this — I am looking at it very seriously, beyond seriously,” he said. “From a legal standpoint, I don’t want to really talk about it yet.”
Meanwhile, he said he will continue keeping an eye on current events and the Biden administration’s reaction to an ongoing border crisis.
“People are coming in by the tens of thousands,” he said in defense of his administration’s tougher immigration policies. “They’re walking in. They — we had — all they had to do was leave it alone.”
Time will tell whether Trump decides to throw his hat in the ring, but GOP leaders and voters alike have made it clear that he maintains a tight grip on the party and its platform — at least in the near term.
