Republican Louisiana Rep. Steve Scalise lashed out at Democratic California Rep. Maxine Waters for spouting the kind of “dangerous rhetoric” that nearly got him killed.
“Let’s be clear: Maxine Waters knew her rhetoric would incite violence in Minneapolis—but she doesn’t care, she just requests police escorts for herself,” Scalise tweeted Monday.
Scalise was one of four people shot and seriously wounded by a left-wing extremist who opened fire at Scalise and other members of Congress during the annual Congressional Baseball Game in Virginia in 2017.
The congressman was rushed to hospital with grave injuries but his condition stabilized after an extensive surgery.
“I was shot because of this kind of dangerous rhetoric,” Scalise added. “Where is the outrage from Dems & the media? They need to condemn this.”

Rep. Waters traveled to Brooklyn Center, Minnesota this weekend amid riots and protests over the fatal shooting of Daunte Wright, a wanted black man, by a police officer. Bodycam footage shows the officer likely intended to use her taser gun before she unwittingly discharged a single shot at Wright, killing him.
Waters addressed Wright’s killing and said she wanted a sentence more than manslaughter in the trial of Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer prosecuted in the death of George Floyd.
Waters encouraged the protesters to “stay in the streets” and “get more confrontational” if they sense injustice, and said she hopes the protests will continue.
“I’m going to fight with all of the people who stand for justice. We’ve got to get justice in this country and we cannot allow these killings to continue,” the lawmaker told reporters. “I came here for one reason, just to be here, to make sure that I let my thoughts be heard among all of those who have spent so much time on the streets. And so I’m hopeful that the protests will continue.”
“We’ve got to stay on the street and we’ve got to get more active, we’ve got to get more confrontational. We’ve got to make sure that they know that we mean business … We cannot go away,” Waters said.
