At least 9 teens shot at 12-year-old’s birthday party — and not one of the 60 attendees will make a formal statement

At least nine young people were shot during a 12-year-old’s birthday party on Saturday night, according to a report from the New York Post.

The party, which took place in LaPlace, Louisiana, had at least 60 attendees.

What are the details?

Gunfire erupted around 8:40 p.m. local time, striking at least nine children under the age of 18. Seven of the nine victims were treated and released, while two of the victims remain hospitalized at the time of this reporting.

Investigators believe that the shooting was a result of a dispute between two groups of “young males” and that two guns were fired during the shooting.

Sheriff Mike Tregre of the St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff’s Office said that no witnesses have come forward to issue any statements on the shooting.

“Not one person has given a formal statement,” Tregre said. “I am asking witnesses to come forward with information to help us learn more about what happened.”

According to a Tuesday report from NBC News, the victims’ ages ranged from 12 to 17. The young victims collectively sustained injuries to the arm, ribs, foot, legs, stomach, head, and more.

NBC News reported that two victims who were respectively shot in the stomach and head remain hospitalized in stable condition.

WWL-TV reported that Rashad Bolden, who lives two doors down from the home at which the shooting took place, said that he witnessed the children being whisked away from the scene via ambulance.

“Everybody I saw taken to the ambulance — they were all kids,” Bolden recalled. “I looked out my window and saw a whole bunch of people scurrying, so I came outside. … For someone to just shoot into the garage full of kids, that’s kind of heartless. You want to call it heartless, but you know they are not old enough to know what heartless is.”

In a Tuesday report from the Associated Press, Tregre was also quoted describing the lack of communication as “frustrating.”

“We have not one witness, not one person that saw anything yet. So we’re trying to solve it on our own right now,” Tregre said. “I’m going to be polite — it’s more than frustrating.”

Tregre said that he and the department will continue investigating the incident.

“We will not stop. We’re going to continue at this,” he insisted. “Somebody’s gotta come forward. This cannot just go like this.”

Investigators are asking any persons with information on the shooting to contact CrimeStoppers at (877) 903-7867.
