Despite it being almost a month since President Joe Biden announced that Vice President Kamala Harris would be overseeing immigration issues on the southern border, Harris still hasn’t made the trip.
According to Brandon Judd, the president of the National Border Patrol Council, Harris’ absence from the border is no accident.
“Putting politics ahead of the country”
Judd told Fox News Live on Sunday that if Harris travels to the southern border, “people are going to expect her to fix the problem, so she avoids it.”
“That’s disgusting,” Judd told Fox News host Griff Jenkins, adding that the vice president is “putting politics ahead of what’s best for this country.”
Judd went on to describe the challenges that Border Patrol agents are facing given the massive influx of illegal migrants who are coming across the border everyday.
According to Judd, the Biden administration is incentivizing more people to come by simply turning loose those who come across illegally, a policy known as “catch and release.”
“As long as we continue to release people into the United States after they violate our laws, with no consequences, people are going to continue to come. That’s the simple fact,” he said.
Judd: We want to welcome people legally
Jenkins agreed with Judd’s assessment, citing Border Patrol sources who have told him that it’s “at a point they haven’t even seen in their 20-year career.”
Judd made clear that he isn’t opposed to all immigration, but that the laws of the land must be followed. “We have the biggest open arms,” he said. “We want to accept people into this country but we want to do it legally, not illegally.”
He also condemned the people who he said are exploiting the crisis for political and financial gain.
“The left wants to excuse illegal immigration, they want to excuse the cartels abusing these children — taking these children and sexually abusing them, physically abusing them, mentally abusing them — they want to excuse this and they continue, by policy, they continue to perpetuate this situation and it’s gaining cartels ground and it’s making them billions of dollars every year off of human misery,” Judd said.
Judd is far from alone in his criticism of Harris, as her reluctance to visit the border has been a point of contention among many Republicans. Last month, Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) slammed Harris after she laughed when asked by a reporter if she had any plans to visit the border. “It is no laughing matter, and I wish the vice president and president would come to the border,” he said.
