Democrats’ efforts to expand the size of the Supreme Court bench are nothing but a partisan “power grab,” at least in the eyes of U.S. Sen. Roger Marshall (R-KS).
The Kansas Republican blasted the alleged attempt at court-packing during a Friday interview with Fox Business host Maria Bartiromo.
“Look, this is an attempt to a power grab by the extreme left,” Marshall said, according to Breitbart.
Threatening to “dilute” the court’s power
Marshall went on to note that several prominent leftists, including even President Joe Biden, have voiced opposition to the idea of adding justices to the high court in the past.
“The president himself once upon a time said this is a bonehead idea,” the senator recalled. “And [the late Supreme Court Justice] Ruth Bader Ginsburg herself said nine is just fine.”
Now, Marshall says, Biden and other once-moderate Democrats are “kowtowing” to the “extreme left.”
“What the far left is trying to do now is weaponize the Supreme Court,” the senator charged, according to Breitbart. “They’re trying to use this legislation to hold it over the head of the Supreme Court and tell them, look, if you don’t do what we want you to do, if you don’t make rulings the way we want it, then we’re going to dilute your power.”
He added: “I think that’s what this is all about.”
“Throwing popcorn at each other”
Even today, however, Democrats in Washington don’t seem to be all on the same page about court-packing. Last week, House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler (D-NY) and other Dems in the House and Senate introduced a bill that would expand the number of justices on the high court to 13, giving Biden the chance to appoint four new jurists to the bench, according to Breitbart.
Soon after, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi declared that she had “no plans to bring [the measure] to the floor,” as the Washington Examiner reported. Instead, Pelosi is punting the issue to the White House, which has established a commission tasked with studying various SCOTUS reforms, including expanding it.
With Democrats deeply divided, Republicans may not have to do much in the way of opposing the measure. In fact, in Sen. Marshall’s words, “it’s kind of fun to sit back and just watch.”
“A big fight [is] going on there in their own party,” the Kansas lawmaker said of congressional Dems, according to Breitbart. “It’s kind of fun to sit back and just watch them throw popcorn at each other.
