It appears to many analysts that Joe Biden is causing a ruckus with Russia. After calling Putin a “killer,” which caused Putin to dump some of our diplomats, it appears that the whole chess game is back on. Biden booted 10 Russian diplomats this last week, which caused Putin to drop kick 10 of ours on Friday. Putin asked for a debate, Biden declined. Biden asked for a summit this summer, Russia said it will depend on US behavior.
The Biden administration announced Thursday the U.S. is expelling 10 Russian diplomats and imposing sanctions against several dozen people and companies, holding the Kremlin accountable for interference in last year’s presidential election and the hacking of federal agencies.
The sweeping measures are meant to punish Russia for actions that U.S. officials say cut to the core of American democracy and to deter future acts by imposing economic costs on Moscow, including by targeting its ability to borrow money. The sanctions are certain to exacerbate tensions with Russia, which promised a response, even as President Joe Biden said the administration could have taken even more punitive measures but chose not to in the interests of maintaining stability.
The logic of the Biden Administration over the ejection of the Russians was about the SolarWinds Orion Software hack that severely intruded on numerous critical US computer structures. It was considered to be the largest intrusion into US software in history. We wrote about it previously. Russia was thought to be the culprit that endangered the US power grid among the many other us agencies. The Biden administration imposed heavy sanctions on the Russian government in addition to booting their diplomats.
Now in response, Putin ejected 10 US diplomats.
Russia on Friday responded to a barrage of new U.S. sanctions by saying it would expel 10 U.S. diplomats and take other retaliatory moves in a tense showdown with Washington.
The Russian Foreign Ministry also published a list of eight current or former U.S. officials barred from entering the country, including U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland, FBI Director Christopher Wray, Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines and Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas.
Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov also said Moscow will move to shut down those U.S. nongovernment organizations that remain in Russia to end what he described as their meddling in Russia’s politics.
The Kremlin also suggested that US Ambassador John Sullivan head home for “consultations,” as his counterpart was told to do after Biden called Putin a killer. Biden also used the pretty-much debunked statement about Russia paying a bounty on the head of our troops as part of his sanctions. Yet our intelligence community says that’s probably not true in the first place. Is Putin challenging Biden to test him? Is he looking to get away with things that could cause serious problems for the US? Likely both.
“Putin is an ex-KGB thug, but he’s engaging in the same kind of activity that he did in the Obama-Biden administration when he stole Crimea and crossed over Obama’s red line. And now, four years later, he’s testing whether or not the president, the new president of the United States that he sees on TV and has made some conclusions about whether or not he thinks he’s a strong leader or not. But he’s going to test — he’s testing him right now, and all of these world leaders are…
…And, you know, our first opportunity to change that politically will be in two years, and that’s why it’s important to keep talking about these issues and drawing a contrast between the Trump administration policies and the Biden administration policies that, very early, are failing.“
John Ratcliffe, former head of the DNI
The Russian submarines operating in the Arctic carry ballistic missiles, as do some of our own. Recently, three Russian subs were seen breaking through the ice together in a first for the Russian Navy. That’s not counting all the missiles pointed at the US in their homeland. The competition is heating up for not only the Arctic, but anywhere else they can push a weak Biden.
