The CEO if Pfizer Inc says he believes people will ‘likely’ need a third dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.
Albert Bourla took part in a panel discussion hosted by CNBC in conjunction with CVS Health that aired on Thursday, during which he said a potential booster shot would be administered 6 to 12 months of being fully vaccinated.
Bourla added that, following the three course vaccination programme, he thinks it is possible that people will then need to be immunised against coronavirus annually.
‘There are vaccines that are like polio that one dose is enough…and there are vaccines like flu than you need every year,’ he said.
‘The Covid virus looks more like the influenza virus than the polio virus.’
Pfizer and its German partner BioNTech began studying a third dose of their vaccine in late February.
They claim the ‘booster shot’ is aimed at protecting against future variants, which may be better at evading antibodies from vaccine than earlier strains of the virus.
About 144 volunteers will be given the third dose, mostly those who participated in the vaccine’s early-stage U.S. testing last year.
