MSNBC Tries To Tie Gov. Ron DeSantis To Sex Allegations Against Matt Gaetz

MSNBC’s Joy Reid and the guest on her show suggested that Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) is “creeping closer” to the sex scandal surrounding Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL).

How we got here: The scandal brought forth Gaetz and DeSantis’ reported friendship and their past work. Gaetz campaigned on DeSantis’s behalf, was part of his transition team, and helped recommend some hires for the governor when he took office.

The story: Reid and former federal prosecutor Glenn Kirschner were discussing the federal sex traffic investigation that focuses on Joel Greenberg, a former tax commissioner in Florida. Gaetz is also a subject of the probe and investigators are trying to determine whether he broke federal law by taking an underage girl across state lines for sex.

During the conversation, they mentioned DeSantis and highlighted that some people implicated in the scandal are tied to him or his administration. Reid pointed to a Politico report about a trip to the Bahamas that included both Gaetz and the former minor. She noted that some of the individuals who were on the trip had past links to DeSantis’ administration.

“Notice if you see somebody’s name that rings a couple of times,” Reid said. “[You] had at least five women, per Politico, you had Gaetz; you had a guy named Jason Pirozzolo, the hand surgeon and GOP fundraiser to Ron DeSantis, who apparently Gaetz wanted to turn into the attorney general of Florida. There’s Halsey Beshears, a former state legislator and former appointed official in the DeSantis administration.”

“If you’re Ron DeSantis, does this feel like it’s creeping closer to you? Because these are your friends, these are your allies,” the MSNBC host asked.

“You have to believe that DeSantis, I mean, these are his boys, these are his guys, right? We’ve seen the pictures,” Kirschner said. “We’ve heard the stories. You have to believe that Ron DeSantis, if he has done anything wrong, feels like things are creeping closer and closer to him.”

There is no evidence that DeSantis is connected to the sex allegations in any way. He was not on the reported trip to the Bahamas as well.

Worth noting: The Associated Press today published a piece titled: “Gaetz and DeSantis: A friendship that may become a liability,” declaring that the “investigation may be moving uncomfortably close to the governor’s office.”

Also, there was a video circulating online of pictures of the governor and Republican lawmaker in professional, social, and media appearance settings.
