MARTINEZ — Contra Costa prosecutors have filed murder charges against the man suspected of initiating a drunk driving crash that killed a 7-year-old girl and her mother’s partner, authorities said.
Christian Ricardo Vargas, 25, was charged Thursday morning with murdering 7-year-old killed as Sela Mataele-Rosalez and a 28-year-old man in a Pittsburg crash that also injured Sela’s mother and her two brothers, 4, and 1, who are recovering at separate hospitals.
The April 12 crash took place at about 6 p.m. on West Leland Road, east of John Henry Johnson Parkway. Investigators said a Toyota Corolla and a Chevrolet Camaro driven by Vargas were both in eastbound lanes when the Camaro, traveling at high speed, rear-ended the Corolla.
The Corolla’s driver lost control and struck several trees, authorities said. The driver of the Corolla was pronounced dead at the scene; a passenger suffered major injuries. Three children were ejected from the Corolla’s back seat: A 1-year-old who was in a car seat, as well as a 4-year-old and a 7-year-old.
The 7-year-old was taken to UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland, where she was pronounced dead. The two other children ejected from the Corolla were hospitalized with serious injuries, along with two passengers from the Camaro, including a 10-year-old child.
