‘A very dishonest story’: Trump refutes CNN claim that he denied meeting with Gaetz

Former President Donald Trump has long accused much of the mainstream media, including CNN, of pushing “fake news” and partisan propaganda meant to help Democrats while hurting Republicans.

He reiterated that belief this week in a statement regarding a report about embattled U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL), going on to call for a prominent Democratic lawmaker to be removed from his committee assignment.

“All anonymous sources”

Gaetz, who is facing allegations of sex trafficking and other misdeeds, was the subject of an anonymously sourced CNN piece asserting that Trump had distanced himself from the fierce congressional ally.

Fox News Channel contributor Mollie Hemingway shared Trump’s take on the topic in a tweet on Monday, writing: “Former President Donald Trump says CNN made up another story about him, and notes [Democratic California U.S. Rep.] Eric Swalwell continues to serve on House Intel Committee, after relationship with Chinese spy.”

Trump’s statement called the assertion that he turned his back on Gaetz “completely false,” going on to call out various aspects of the CNN report.

“Fake News CNN, relying on all anonymous sources, meaning they probably made the whole thing up, wrote a very dishonest story claiming Congressman Matt Gaetz asked for a meeting with me at Mar-a-Lago, in Palm Beach, Florida, and was denied,” he wrote.

In its report on the matter, CNN asserted that Trump’s aides rejected Gaetz’s request for a personal meeting, ostensibly to keep the former president from becoming embroiled in the scandal.

“This is a total lie”

As for the reference to Swalwell, who was one of the Trump administration’s fiercest critics on Capitol Hill, the ex-president wrote: “Why doesn’t CNN investigate ad write about lightweight Democrat Congressman Eric Swalwell, who had a torrid and physical relationship with the Chinese spy Fang-Fang, but is somehow on the once-prestigious House Intelligence Committee.”

The one-time White House hopeful “has been compromised and is a national security threat to the United States,” Trump added, concluded that Swalwell “should be removed from the Committee immediately!”

For his part, Swalwell has denied wrongdoing without specifically denying his relationship with the foreign spy. Democrats blocked consideration of a GOP resolution last month that sought to remove him from the intelligence panel.

A new undercover video released by Project Veritas adds to the speculation that CNN is politically biased and includes footage of one network technical director admitting as much.

Gaetz has also denied the network’s report and asked for a retraction, declaring: “This is a total lie. I am on a pre-planned vacation with my fiancee. I was welcomed at Trump Doral days ago. No such meeting was denied or sought.”
