Capitol Police officer William “Billy” Evans, who was killed after an armed suspect rammed his car into Evans and fellow officer earlier this month, lay in honor inside the U.S. Capitol on Tuesday.

During the service, Evans was hailed as a selfless hero who put the lives of others before his own.
President Joe Biden, House Speaker Nancy, Pelosi, and other prominent politicians attended the ceremony and made brief remarks about Evans’ life and service.
“He was defined by his dignity, his decency, his loyalty and his courage,” Biden said.
Evans, who had two children, served 18 years with the Capitol Police before he was killed.

“He was the one who always kept his word. He was the one who, just like the folks I grew up with, wasn’t capable of saying no when you needed him,” Biden said.
“Your dad is a hero,” Biden told Evans’ children. “It’s in your blood,” he said adding “the moment of the smile comes without the tear.”
“I promise you it’s going to come. It just takes a while. It takes a while, but when it comes, you’ll know because he’s still with you. He’s still in your heart,” Biden said.

Evans is only the sixth Capitol Police officer killed in the line of duty in the organization’s history.
The service was the second for a Capitol Police officer in three months after a service held for Capitol officer Brian Sicknick in January. Sicknick was one of five people who died during the Jan. 6 storming of the U.S. Capitol.
Noah Green, a 25-year-old man of Indiana, killed Evans after striking him and another officer with his car on April 2 at a Capitol Police checkpoint. Green got out of the car and charged the officers wielding a knife, at which point officers used deadly force and shot him dead.
The second officer who was struck was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and is expected to make a full recovery.
Before Facebook took down Green’s account, screenshots of his posts showed he was shared images and clips of Nation of Islam rallies and in his bio identified as a “Follower of Farrakhan,” referring to the controversial Nation of Islam leader, Louis Farrakhan.
In a statement before Tuesday’s ceremony, the Capitol Police said: “As we mourn the loss of Officer Billy Evans, we are grateful for the honor bestowed upon him by Congress.”
