Harris faces new criticism over reluctance to visit border amid immigration crisis

Since President Joe Biden tasked her with addressing the nation’s immigration problem, Vice President Kamala Harris has faced mounting pressure to visit the U.S.-Mexico border.

She has consistently refused, however, opting instead to spend time visiting a Chicago bakery, tweeting about social issues, and event posting a selfie from aboard a private jet.

Some Americans might chalk up her reluctance to view the border crisis in person as evidence of incompetence, at least one prominent critic believes it is all part of her party’s plan.

“In favor of open borders”

“They want the border to be open,” said former GOP House Speaker Newt Gingrich this week. “Go back and look at the presidential primary debates. They are all in favor of open borders.”

The long-time Republican elected official added that progressive Democrats “are all in favor of eliminating” Immigration and Customs Enforcement as well as “any threat to sanctuary cities.”

For his part, Biden said during the presidential campaign in 2019 that the U.S. “could afford to take in a heartbeat another two million people.”

He later said in an interview with Vice News that he opposed deporting undocumented immigrants for any reason short of a felony conviction, adding that he did not “count drunk driving as a felony.”

“You cannot build enough facilities”

Fox News noted that Harris was among those on stage at a Democratic presidential primary debate who raised their hands when asked whether illegal border crossings should be decriminalized.

In 2018, the then-U.S. senator from California made headlines for comparing ICE agents to members of the Ku Klux Klan.

Just last month, she drew criticism for laughing off a reporter’s question regarding a future visit to the border. That incident sparked a pointed reaction from Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX), who said that the immigration crisis is “no laughing matter” and that he wanted the vice president to witness the situation for herself.

“I’ve been there, as you can imagine, on numerous occasions,” he said of the nation’s southern border. “But the Border Patrol is telling us that you cannot build enough facilities, you cannot build enough capacity to keep up with the expected increase in flow of people coming across the border.”
