It’s been almost three weeks since President Joe Biden tasked Vice President Kamala Harris with addressing the surge of migrants crossing America’s southern border.
Yet despite her role as “border czar,” Harris has yet to actually visit the border and hasn’t even held a press conference since being assigned to the position, the Washington Examiner reported.
“I can think of nobody who is better qualified to do this. When she speaks, she speaks for me. She doesn’t have to check with me,” Biden said in announcing Harris’ assignment, according to Fox News.
Plenty of traveling, just not to the border
Despite Biden’s ringing endorsement, Harris hasn’t been doing a whole lot of speaking on the border, period.
Furthermore, although she’s found time to travel to her home state of California, as well as a few other U.S. cities, she hasn’t visited the border.
“The vice president enjoyed an Easter weekend at her home in southern California but did not visit the nearby southern border,” the Examiner reported. “During that same weekend, Harris stopped by her native Oakland, the first time doing so since winning the vice presidency, where she traveled with Gov. Gavin Newsom to a water treatment plant to raise support for the White House’s $2.3 trillion infrastructure plan,” the outlet continued.
Harris also took a trip to Chicago to visit a local bakery and promote the COVID vaccine.
“No laughing matter”
In an op-ed for Fox News, Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel slammed Harris for her abdication of responsibility on the border crisis.
“It would have been incredibly easy for Harris to add a stop on her trip to show her support and to console, comfort and lead on the ground,” McDaniel wrote. “The flight time from LA to San Diego is about 30 minutes.”
Last month, Harris burst out laughing after being asked by a reporter if she had any plans to visit the border, Fox News reported.
That drew a sharp response from Texas Sen. John Cornyn (R), who told the network that what’s happening on the border “is no laughing matter.”
“I’ve been there, as you can imagine, on numerous occasions,” he said. “But the Border Patrol is telling us that you cannot build enough facilities, you cannot build enough capacity to keep up with the expected increase in flow of people coming across the border.”
