The progressive candidate for Cook County state’s attorney is suddenly closing the gap in his primary election after more than 10,000 votes were suddenly “found” in Chicago.
The Chicago Board of Elections added more than 10,000 votes Saturday after director Max Bever claimed the board somehow forgot to count mail-in votes.
“In adding up the total number of Vote By Mail ballots the Board had received back so far, I mistakenly left out additional ballots that had been received back via USPS the evening of Monday, March 18,” Bever said, according to WBBM-TV.
Bever claimed, “I traded speed for accuracy in reporting out numbers this week as quickly as I could. I truly regret this error on my part and for the confusion that it has caused the voters of Chicago. I will share updated numbers only when they are accurate and verified.”
Retired Judge Eileen O’Neill Burke was winning over the progressive candidate, former prosecutor Clayton Harris III, until the additional 10,659 ballots were ‘found.’
The two are running for the Democrat nomination to replace embattled Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx, who is not running for re-election.
O’Neill Burke is running as a tough-on-crime candidate, while Harris is the progressive in the race.
As of Monday evening, the new ballot dump had narrowed O’Neill Burke’s lead to only about 1,600 votes.
New: 3,137 suburban Cook County ballots were added to vote totals this afternoon. The State’s Attorney candidates essentially split them — Harris took 1,538, O’Neill Burke w/ 1,428. No word on the 2,500 city ballots yet expected today.

And the city just added 2,286 votes. Harris picks up about 260 votes. O’Neill Burke leads by 1,643 votes.

The news of the newly discovered additional ballots, which has allowed Harris to close the gap in the vote counts, has raised suspicions.
