Austin Police Officer and Suspect Both Shot In Gunfight

Austin, TX. – Both an Austin Police Officer and a suspect were shot early Friday morning after a gunfight in northeast Austin.

Authorities say it occurred just after 12AM at the East Highway 290 Westbound Service Road between Cameron Road and Interstate 35.

Interim Austin Police Chief Joseph Chacon said they received a 911 call saying someone in another car was shooting at them. Several minutes later, officers found the reporting party, who had not been shot.

Officers then located the vehicle of the person believed to be the shooter. Police initiated a traffic stop of the suspect and as the officers exited their vehicle, the suspect began shooting at them and they returned fire.

Both a police officer and the suspect were shot and wounded. They were both transported to a hospital and underwent surgery.  Authorities say the officer is expected to survive.
